Frequently asked questions

Is the wheel really random?

Yes. The winner is chosen with your browser's secure random number generator before the wheel starts to move, and the animation simply lands on that result. Every slice is equally likely unless you give it extra weight.

Are my names stored on a server?

No. Your list is kept in your browser on your own device. When you create a link, the names are packed into the link itself, so nothing is uploaded to us.

How many names can I add?

Up to 2,000 entries, with names up to 120 characters. Past about 60 entries the names no longer fit on the slices, so near the end of the spin the wheel slows to a crawl and zooms in on the pointer. You can read the names passing by, and the last one is the winner. You can switch the zoom off in the Style tab.

Can I share a wheel?

Yes. Open the Share tab and create a link. Anyone who opens it sees the same names and colours, and can change them without affecting yours.

Can I import names from Excel or a CSV file?

Yes. Press Import above the list, or drop a CSV, TSV, text or Excel (.xlsx) file onto it. Pick the sheet and the column that holds the names, check the preview, and add them to the wheel. The file is read in your browser and is never uploaded. You can also paste a column straight from Excel or Google Sheets.

What is Slot mode?

Slot mode swaps the wheel for a slot machine reel that uses the same list. It is only a different look: there is still exactly one winner, chosen the same fair way as on the wheel.

Does the site play sounds?

Only if you switch it on. Press the speaker button next to SPIN: the speaker icon switches sound on and off and the slider sets the volume (zero is off). It is off by default and your choice is remembered on your device.

Is Wheel Pick Names free?

Yes. The wheel is free to use without an account. The site is supported by advertising.
